A Study of Using the Diapers, Skin Care and Satisfaction of Infant and Toddler



Abstract
This study is on the effectiveness and the use of diapers focusing on the health of the baby¢¥s skin and the satisfaction felt by the mother¢¥s.
This study focuses on the personal use of diapers, the mother¢¥s use and the personal knowledge of the effects of the diapers¢¥s on the baby¢¥s skin, the satisfaction of the mothers with the diapers. It also to is understand the period and trend of social change, to gain knowledge of the health benefits of the diapers¢¥s on the baby¢¥s skin and the proper method to establish lasting health benefits attributed to diaper use.
The purpose of the study is to investigate the reality of disposable diaper use and their effect on the health of the skin as well as the mother¢¥s satisfaction with the use of disposable diapers.
Questionnaires were given to 142 mothers that visited an Inchon pediatric clinic. The methodology used in the research is descriptive in manner. The data was collected from June to August of 2000. The data was analyzed using SPSS for the x2-test, ANOVA, t-test and the Pearson Correlation coefficient.
The results were as follows:
1. The average age of the respondents was 29.89 years old, 76.8% were non-working and 68% had a yearly family income of 10,100,000-20,000,000 won. The average age of the babies was 12.86 months old, the average weight was 10.51 kg and 75.4% had the primary care givers being their mothers.
2. The babies personal information use of diapers is follows;
1) 66.2% of the babies were using disposable diapers, however some mother¢¥s reported that they use cotton diapers when they run out of disposable diapers.
2) 79.6% of the mother¢¥s reported that convenience was the main reason they chose disposables and 23.9% reported to for the health of the baby¢¥s skin.
3) Of the mother¢¥s that did not use disposable diapers 77.3% reported the reason as being they were not good for the health of the baby¢¥s skin.
4) The mothers using disposable diapers reported different things when considering to use those diapers. The first factor was how well the diapers were ventilated, the second factor thing to be considered was absorption while the third factor was the price of the diapers.
5) At the time of the purchase of the disposable diapers. 47.8% of the mothers regarded the diapers as being a luxury good.
3. 60.6% of mothers reported babies having diaper rash. 55.6% of the mothers reported that the cause of the rash was that the babies skin was sensitive and 54.2% reported that they thought that the reason was because they didn¢¥t change wet diapers.
4. 54.0% responded that they reported the problem of the rash to their doctor. 80.7% reported that they didn¢¥t receive enough information on the subject, while 47.2% responded that they spoke to their friends about the problem of the rash.
5. 3.19 responded that they were satisfied with the use of disposable diapers.
6. There were no other significant responses of satisfactory qualities of the diapers reported.
